WHY BE CATHOLIC?
The story of a young, Catholic rock ‘n roller who fell in love with Christ, and why he decided not to leave the Catholic Church. With his engaging personal witness, Dr. D’Ambrosio explains in a fresh, contemporary way that “Catholic” means fullness of life.
This talk will reenergize already devout Catholics, giving them new insights into the role of Mary, Tradition, and the sacraments. For Sunday, nominal, and inactive Catholics, this talk is a spark to a deeper conversion to Christ and deeper commitment to his church. For non-Catholic Christians, this talk explains a few of the Catholic distinctives and provides a friendly, non-offensive invitation to discover elements of our common Christian heritage that make for a deeper, richer life in Christ.
Crisis Moments in the Story of the Church
This multipart series has been given to general audiences as well as provided as a part of formation or continuing education for deacons and priests. The Early Fathers in the age of persecution, the battle for the creed, the split between East and West, the tragedy of the Reformation, and the drama of Vatican II are all discussed not only with a view towards understanding these moments, but how today we are to work to address the problems confronted by the actors in this 2000 year drama.
The Early Fathers: Who they are and Why they Matter
In a single talk, Dr. Italy points out several contemporary issues and shows how these issues were already confronted in the earliest days of the Church, providing insights, answers, and inspiration for us today. Drawn from his best-selling book When the Church Way Young: Voices of the Early Fathers, this talk covers some of the most colorful characters in the history of the Church.
From Aquinas to Luther: What Went Wrong?
The Reformation did not arise out of nowhere. This talk helps explain how decline in theology, spirituality, and clergy scandals helped set the stage for rebellion and conflict. Since the Second Vatican Council tells us that “men on both sides were to blame,” this talk provides a fair and balanced assessment on what the true causes of rupture were and how we can work today for healing and unity.
Vatican II: the Real Story
The Second Vatican Council was a landmark in the history of the Catholic Church. The ironic thing about the Council, however, is that very often neither admirers or detractors have extensive, first hand knowledge of the documents of the council and their background. Having done his Ph.D. dissertation on Henri de Lubac, one of the leading theological experts present at the council, Dr. D’Ambrosio is uncommonly qualified to dispel the myths and open up to clergy and laity alike what Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI and the Council fathers were really trying to achieve regarding liturgical renewal, ecumenism, evangelization, and the overall revitalization of the Church. Humorous anecdotes about John XXIII as well as stories of the conflicts and controversies of the council keep all listeners, regardless of education, riveted throughout. This can be given as a single talk or a series.
Meekness is not Weakness: the Story of Judge Bill Clark
Few know that Reagan’s best friend and closest advisor was a profoundly holy Catholic man who had more impact on the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe that anyone besides Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan. This talk shows how Bill’s life illustrates servant leadership and exemplifies the biblical virtue of meekness.
Karol Wojtyla: John Paul II the Great
Though many popes have been canonized as saints, the designation “the Great” has been traditionally appended to the names of only two: Leo I and Gregory I. This talk explains why extraordinary John Paul II should be the third, distilling his writing, spirituality, and role in world affairs into one inspiring and insightful talk.
St. Maximilian Koble and the Triumph of the Heart
As executive producer of Triumph of the Heart, the 2025 film on St. Maximilian Kolbe, Dr. Italy has a unique perspective to share on the saint. His inspiring talk reveals how and why Kolbe’s life and work distinguished him as a spiritual and pastoral giant even before his martyrdom. Additionally, it shows why his final 14 days perfectly crowned his message and his work. This talk is usually followed by a Q & A session on the saint and on the movie.
